About

Winner of Best LGBT Short two years in a row and an Audience Award from the Toronto Short Film Festival, Emily Gutierrez is a writer, director, and producer. Her first short film, ITALIAN 101, is a light-hearted love story about two young women who fall in love in their university Italian class. After the success of ITALIAN 101, Emily went on to make the sequel, ITALIAN 102, in which the two main characters go on their first date, but not without unwanted attention. And now, Emily has written and directed her third short film, THE BOXING RING, about a young, queer, Filipino-Canadian woman who is about to compete in her first Muay Thai competition.

“I’m interested in exploring romantic relationships between women as well as personal growth.”

- Emily Gutierrez

Growing up, Emily never got to see someone like herself on screen. As a queer, Toronto-born Filipino filmmaker, it’s important that she produces engaging and romantic stories about queer women.

Emily loves food, martial arts, and working out. She lives with her son and two rescue cats in Stoney Creek, Ontario.
